Brother Joshua A. Busby Elected Southwest Regional Director

busbyThe Southwest Region of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity has elected Brother Joshua A. Busby as their new Regional Director. Brother Busby was initiated into the fraternity in the Spring of 2003 by way of the Beta Epsilon Chapter at Langston University.  He is currently a member of the Delta Beta Sigma Chapter in Oklahoma City, OK.

When asked as to what the Fraternity can expect from him as Regional Director, Bro. Busby replied “I’m humbled that I’ve been given the opportunity to continue to serve the brotherhood in this capacity and I don’t take it for granted.  As a Regional Director I plan to continue to champion our chapters and Brothers for the great work that they do in and for Sigma.  Our continued growth brings new opportunities but it also brings challenges.  The region has elected a diverse board of individuals who bring a wealth of knowledge and strength to their respective positions and the region will profit thereby because of them.  While I am the leader of the region, I know and believe that it is not all about me.  It’s about the brothers that are in the trenches working for Sigma on our campuses and in our communities.”

As the Southwest Regional Director Brother Busby plans to build a culture that will:

1.      Prepare our next generation of leaders

2.      Embrace the Sigma Beta Club

3.      Reinvest in the brotherhood

4.      Reinvigorate our membership development strategies

5.      Cultivate professional networking opportunities

6.      Strengthen the utilization of technology

“These things will take our region to the next level of service excellence.  I look forward to continuing our path to greatness for not only the Southwestern Region but the fraternity as a whole” states Bro. Busby.

“Saving Lives Everyday!” During the months of April, May and June of 2014, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. members and chapters throughout the nation, will collect canned goods and non-perishable food items to benefit the Hosea Williams Feed the Hungry & Homeless Program in Atlanta, GA, as well as similar programs in the Washington, DC area.
Beginning in April, members are encouraged to send donated items to the Fraternity’s International Headquarters, located at 145 Kennedy Street, NW, Washington, DC 20011. During the organization’s Centennial Celebration from July 16-20, 2014 at the Marriott Wardman Park, the collected goods will be displayed, transported and distributed to the food programs in Atlanta and Washington.
The late, Hosea Williams, was a principal leader of the civil rights movement, political figure, ordained minister and member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity. Renowned for his militancy and his ability to organize demonstrations and mobilize protesters, he helped coordinate the 1965 protest march in Alabama from Selma to Montgomery.
Headed by his daughter Elisabeth Williams-Omilami, the program’s mission is to examine and raise public awareness about the many problems facing families and individuals that are living in poverty or are at risk of slipping into poverty. The program then seeks to mobilize products, volunteers and financial resources to solve those problems, or to ease the burden caused by the problems.

March For Babies Season

It’s March for Babies® season and we would like you and your chapter to help support our international March of Dimes Initiative.  Need a reason to walk with us? How about nearly half a million reasons: that’s how many babies are born too soon every year in the United States.  This effects our members and our communities disproportionally.  Last year, one in 6 births to African American mothers were preterm.  The preterm birth rate among African-American mothers were 1.6 times that of other mothers. There are many brothers and their families who are affected by premature births and birth defects.

Our 40 year partnership with the March of Dimes is focused on working together to prevent premature births and build strong fathers and male role models in the African American community through sponsoring “Building Stronger Fathers” seminars and “Stepping to Save Babies” Events during the March for Babies this spring.  Sigma men are GREAT Fathers and we should all do our part!

With you and your chapter on our team, we can give families hope by raising money that funds lifesaving research and programs that help moms, babies and families. Our fraternities goal is to raise $100,000.  To reach that goal, we need 200 chapters raising $500.  This year we are making it even easier to donate as chapters and as individual brothers. We want chapters to get creative and raise funds for this worthy cause. There will be awards for Most Active Region, Most Active State, Most Active Chapter, and most Active Brother this year! Last year, we had 112 chapters signed up to raise money and walk. We almost reached our goal and I am sure we will definitely reach it this year!

Getting started is very easy.  Just go to www.marchforbabies.org/phibetasigma, find your state and chapter name, and then click “join this team.”

You can download badges to use in your email signature or on your blog. Reach more friends by sharing your fundraising page on Facebook. Additionally, the March for Babies iPhone® or Android app make fundraising on-the-go a breeze. You can even donate to March for Babies on behalf of the fraternity without participating in a March of Babies event!

We’re on our way to meeting our Phi Beta Sigma March for Babies goal and we hope your chapter can help. Visit marchforbabies.org  for more information about the walk nearest you and the local March of Dimes office that can help you reach our fraternity’s goal.
